# Google, Synaptics Tease Edge AI Chip as Auto, Robot SoCs Arrive

> Google Research says Synaptics will unveil a co-designed low-power edge AI chip next week. NPU chips for cars and robots are arriving, often still in sampling.

**Chips that run AI on the device — not in the cloud — are showing up from wearables to cars and robots. What is firm today is a wave of announcements and samples, not mass production across every product.**

At its Research@ event on Oct. 14, Google Research said Synaptics will reveal a **next-generation low-power edge AI chip** next week, built with Google’s open-source IP. Edge AI means running AI on the device instead of in the cloud. Target uses include smart glasses and watches, connected cameras, streamers, and industrial vision and voice systems.

The same day, Synaptics listed Tech Day in San Jose for Oct. 20, with a Google×Synaptics talk on moving Coral NPU from research into silicon. An NPU is an on-chip accelerator built for neural-network math.

## What is confirmed — and what is still missing

Google’s official post locks in the **timing (next week) and use cases**. It does not name the part, quote TOPS (trillions of operations per second), list pricing or volume schedules, or say which Google devices will ship with it and when.

Secondary coverage such as R&D World has floated Coral M2, milliwatt-class power, and efficiency comparisons from the Research@ stage. Those figures are not in Google’s blog. This article sticks to the official announcements; the secondary piece is only in the sources list.

Developers already have a path. In March, Synaptics shipped a Coral Dev Board on the Astra SL2610 line, combining a Torq NPU (1 TOPS) with Coral NPU. A limited edition runs Gemma 3 270M on the board out of the box. When SL2610 was announced in October 2025, Synaptics said it was sampling, with general availability planned for calendar Q2 2026.

## From IoT to cars and robots — read the numbers with the stage

The same pattern shows up in automotive and robotics. Treat performance claims and **shipping stage** together.

In January, ahead of CES — the big consumer tech show held each year in Las Vegas — Texas Instruments introduced the TDA5 SoC family. It scales edge AI from 10 TOPS to as high as 1,200 TOPS, with efficiency above 24 TOPS/W, aimed at up to SAE Level 3 autonomy. Samples of the first device, TDA54-Q1, go to select automotive customers by **the end of 2026**.

STMicroelectronics positions Stellar P3E as an automotive MCU with an on-die Neural-ART NPU. It claims more than 20× acceleration for inference (using a finished model to produce answers) versus the main cores, with sub-millisecond runs. Engineering samples are available; automotive qualification and production are targeted for **the second half of 2026**, a window that is already under way.

NXP announced the i.MX 952 in October 2025, with an eIQ Neutron NPU for in-cabin sensing, HMI, and industrial vision. Sampling was targeted for **the first half of 2026**; we did not confirm whether it has started. In June, indie launched iND881 for driver/occupant monitoring and smart cameras on AMRs and humanoids. It is ASIL-B rated and sampling now.

For battery devices, BrainChip announced Sequora Core IP on Oct. 14. It targets generative AI and LLMs on the edge, from a few million parameters up to about 3 billion. It is **licensable IP** customers integrate into their own SoCs, not a finished chip.

## Why onsemi wants Synaptics

On June 25, onsemi and Synaptics agreed that onsemi would buy Synaptics in an all-stock deal valued at about $7 billion. onsemi wants to pair its power and sensing lineup with Synaptics’ edge AI compute (Astra), wireless connectivity, and HMI for “Physical AI” in cars, robots, and related systems. Closing is targeted for **mid-2027**, subject to Synaptics stockholder and regulatory approvals.

onsemi also said the deal would expand its total addressable market by about $30 billion to $243 billion by 2030. That is the acquirer’s outlook, not a measured market size.

## Easy to misread

The through-line is on-device inference. Reading the wave as “every gadget now trains models on chip” goes beyond what the releases emphasize. Official materials stress inference acceleration.

TOPS also depend on precision and workload, so TI’s 1,200 and Synaptics Torq’s 1 are not the same yardstick. Announcements and samples are not the same as volume production or phone/car design wins. Even if Tech Day adds part numbers, endpoints do not become “intelligent hardware” overnight.

## What to watch

- Part name, specs, and sample timing from Synaptics Tech Day on Oct. 20
- Whether TDA5, Stellar P3E, and i.MX 952 hit their sample and production windows
- Regulatory and stockholder progress on the onsemi–Synaptics deal (target close mid-2027)
