Claude Max Adds $100–$200 Monthly API Credits, but Not for Claude Code

Claude Max subscribers who apply for and link a Console organization get separate API credits each month: $100 on Max 5x and $200 on Max 20x. They cannot be used for Claude Code, and any unspent amount disappears every month.

Anthropic has added monthly credits for the Claude Platform to its Max and Team plans. According to the support help article, the feature was added in an Oct. 7 update. Pick one organization in the Claude Console and link it to your subscription, and the credits arrive as a balance in that organization. The Console is the developer dashboard for managing API keys and usage, and an organization is the account unit inside it.

Your existing plan limits stay the same. The credit is not extra room that raises those limits. It is a separate balance that can be spent only on the API.

How much you get and how to apply

Plan Monthly credit
Max 5x $100
Max 20x $200
Team Standard seat $20 per seat
Team Premium seat $100 per seat

Team plans pool the per-seat credits in one place, with a combined cap of $500 a month. Three Standard seats and two Premium seats, for example, get $260 a month.

You apply on the web only, even if you pay through an app store.

  1. Open claude.ai in a browser and go to Settings > Billing. For Team plans it is Organization settings > Billing.
  2. Under API credits, click Link organization, choose the Console organization that should receive the credits, and accept the terms. If you don’t have one, you can create it in this step.
  3. The amount and expiry date show up under Promotional credits on the Console’s Billing page.

There are conditions. The plan must be in good standing, and if you subscribed recently, you must wait 7 days after signing up. On Max, only the subscriber can apply, and in the Console organization you must be an Owner, Admin or Billing member. Free, Pro and Enterprise plans are not eligible. You must sign in to the Console with the same email you use on claude.ai, and you do not need to add a payment method on the Claude Platform just to receive these credits.

You cannot change the link yourself. Each plan gets credits for one Console organization, and each organization receives credits from only one plan. To change it, you have to contact support, so pick the organization you will actually use and link it.

Where you can and cannot spend them

The Message Batches API is a way to send many requests at once and get results later.

Covered Not covered
Claude API (Messages API, Message Batches API) Claude Code (terminal, IDE, desktop, web)
Claude Managed Agents Extra usage purchases in the Claude apps and Claude Code
Claude Agent SDK Claude on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, or Microsoft Foundry
Console Playground

Managed Agents is a service that runs agents on Anthropic’s servers for you. The Agent SDK (a toolkit for building your own agents on Claude) and the Console Playground (a web page for trying models) are also covered by the credits.

You cannot spend them on regular Claude Code sessions. Claude Code used interactively in the terminal, IDE, desktop app or web is not covered, even if you link an organization. These credits do not solve the problem of running out of plan limits.

claude -p (a mode that runs Claude Code once without a back-and-forth chat) draws from different places depending on how you run it. Run with an API key from the linked organization, it comes out of the credits. Run while signed in with your subscription account, it comes out of your plan limits. Runs through a GitHub Action, an IDE extension or the desktop app count as Claude Code usage and are not covered, even with -p.

The Agent SDK follows the same rule, so SDK usage while signed in with a subscription account still comes out of plan limits. The change to SDK usage that had been announced for June 15 is on hold. To spend the credits, run the SDK with an API key from the linked organization.

How the credits get used up

  • They arrive every billing cycle and do not roll over. They land right after payment, and annual subscriptions get them monthly. Anything unspent disappears when the cycle ends.
  • Credits are spent first, then any money you topped up yourself. Auto-reload looks only at the balance you topped up yourself.
  • API keys in the organization share one balance. To set a limit per project, create a workspace in the Console and put a spend cap on it. A workspace is a unit that separates keys and usage by project.
  • Requests stop when the balance runs out. The shortfall is not billed to your subscription. To continue, buy credits or turn on auto-reload.
  • Usage paid with credits also counts toward the monthly spend cap. The cap applies per organization and resets on the 1st of each month.
  • Your usage tier may go up too. The usage tier is the level that sets how often and how heavily you can call the API. According to the Platform docs, a linked organization gets at least the Start tier, and at least the Build tier if the monthly credit is over $200. This is not in the help article and appears only in the Platform docs.

Changing your plan changes how this is handled. If you cancel or drop to an ineligible plan, new credits stop, but credits you already received stay usable until they expire. Upgrading from Max 5x to Max 20x brings prorated credits right away, then $200 each month. Moving from Max to Team ends the Max link, and the Team owner must apply again once the Team plan is 7 days old.

Easy to misread

  • It is easy to assume you get the credits the moment you apply, but new subscribers must wait 7 days. According to the help article, the feature is rolling out in stages over several days, so you may not see the application prompt yet. If it is still missing after 7 days, check your plan and role and contact support.
  • The claim that Max 20x lands on the Start tier matches the Platform docs. The help article doesn’t mention tiers.
  • The Agent SDK-specific credit that appeared in June does not exist now, and it is separate from these monthly credits.

What to watch next

The feature is opening in stages starting with some accounts. Watch when the application prompt shows up on your account and how the wording of the help articles changes. It is also worth following how much the usage tier affects actual call limits, and whether the Agent SDK policy put on hold in June changes again.
