Anthropic Reportedly Posted $16.8B in Q3 Revenue; November IPO and Up to $2T Valuation Under Discussion
The company has not confirmed it, but reports of a November IPO and a $1.8–2 trillion valuation keep coming.
Anthropic held a pre-IPO investor briefing at its San Francisco headquarters on Oct. 14. Reuters, citing an investor who attended, reported that Q3 revenue was $16.8 billion, up 45% from the previous quarter. Bloomberg reported that the company could begin its roadshow (a tour of meetings where a company pitches its business to investors before listing) the week of Nov. 9 and start trading before Thanksgiving (Nov. 26). An IPO is a company’s first sale of shares to the public.
The numbers so far
| Item | Details | Confidence |
|---|---|---|
| Q3 revenue | $16.8 billion, up 45% from Q2. Q1 was $4.7 billion and Q2 was $11.6 billion | Reuters, citing one investor at the briefing. The company has not published it |
| IPO timing | Roadshow from the week of Nov. 9, trading could start before Nov. 26. Reuters said it could come after the November U.S. midterm elections | Bloomberg report (Oct. 1). Not confirmed by the company and could change |
| Valuation | $1.8–2 trillion | Market participants’ estimates and numbers under discussion. Not a target set by the company |
| Last private round | $65 billion raised on May 28 at a $965 billion valuation. Run-rate revenue topped $47 billion in early May | Anthropic’s official announcement |
Run-rate revenue is the most recent month or two of revenue scaled to a full year. It is a different number from quarterly revenue and the two should not be compared directly.
Compared with last year
| Item | 2025 (last year) | 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | About $4.6 billion, roughly 12x the year before | Q1 $4.7B, Q2 $11.6B, Q3 $16.8B. About $33 billion over nine months, roughly 7x all of last year |
| Operating loss | $8.06 billion, up from $2.98 billion in 2024 | No figure is known yet. There is a claim of an “adjusted” operating profit in Q3, but that is not the same as an accounting-basis number |
| Net loss | About $42 billion, of which about $34 billion was non-cash accounting charges | No figure is known yet |
| Customer concentration | The top two customers made up about 24% of revenue | No figure is known yet |
| Future commitments | At least $518 billion on computing infrastructure over 10 years. About 80% is non-cancellable or must be paid regardless of use |
- Read the loss numbers in parts. The $42 billion net loss is large, but about $34 billion is accounting treatment such as changes in the value of financial instruments. The operating loss is in the $8 billion range.
- Growth is very fast. But last year’s figures come from a confidential filing quoted in press reports that we cannot read, and this year’s quarterly revenue is one investor’s account. They may not be on the same basis.
- The ratio depends on what you divide by. Q3 revenue scaled to a year is about $67 billion. A $1.8–2 trillion valuation is about 27–30 times that, while the May private round ($965 billion on $47 billion run-rate) was about 20 times (our calculation). Reports say banks frame it using expected 2028 revenue, so the same valuation reads differently depending on the basis.
Whether these numbers favor an IPO is for the market to judge, and this post does not.
Compared with OpenAI (GPT)
OpenAI, which makes GPT, is Anthropic’s biggest rival. The numbers below use different bases and dates, so they cannot be lined up in a single row, and OpenAI’s figures conflict across sources.
| Item | Anthropic | OpenAI |
|---|---|---|
| Run-rate revenue | Above $47 billion in early May (company announcement). One report puts it at $65 billion at the end of July, from an investor update | “Approaching” $50 billion (Financial Times, told to investors by the company). Axios reported about $70 billion on Sept. 29. TechCrunch flagged that the two conflict |
| 2025 revenue | About $4.6 billion | About $13.1 billion (CNBC, from non-public material) |
| Latest private valuation | $965 billion (May) | $852 billion (March, $122 billion raised) |
| IPO | Reported to be aiming for November | Reportedly leaning toward 2027. No official timeline |
- On run-rate revenue, Anthropic looks similar or ahead. OpenAI’s $50–70 billion overlaps with Anthropic’s $65 billion. OpenAI’s number has not settled, so we cannot say Anthropic is “ahead.”
- On 2025 revenue, it is the reverse. OpenAI was about 3 times larger last year. Anthropic has closed that gap quickly this year.
- Anthropic is valued higher. The dates differ, though (May for Anthropic, March for OpenAI). OpenAI is reportedly in talks about a new round at $1.2 trillion or more.
- OpenAI’s Q2 revenue of about $6.7 billion is compared with Anthropic’s $11.6 billion, but we found the OpenAI figure on only one secondary tracking site citing the Wall Street Journal.
Reports citing the New York Times say OpenAI is leaning toward an IPO in 2027, with CEO Sam Altman reluctant to give up a $1 trillion valuation. OpenAI has not announced an official timeline.
Claims we could not confirm
- “Targeting $1.8–2 trillion”: this is not a target set by the company but investors’ estimates and numbers under discussion. Anthropic has not stated an official target.
- A single valuation figure: the reports give a range of $1.8–2 trillion, so quoting one number such as “about $2 trillion” overstates how settled it is.
- “Disclosed Q3 financial results”: this was not a filing or public announcement. An investor relayed numbers from a private briefing, so they cannot be treated as final.
- “Major outlets including CNBC reported it”: the reports we confirmed are from Bloomberg and Reuters. We did not find a CNBC article.
- “OpenAI pushed its IPO to 2027”: reports say it is leaning toward 2027, which is not an official decision.
What could change for developers
The following is estimates and advice based on reports. This is not investment advice.
- There is no evidence that API prices or terms will change right away. An IPO is about company ownership and is separate from product pricing or usage terms.
- Filings let you see the size of the business in numbers. Once public, a company must disclose quarterly results, risk factors, and customer concentration in a set format. That is material for deciding which AI company to build on for the long term.
- Check official channels. Announcements may become more cautious while an IPO is being prepared. Confirm pricing, model retirements, and terms changes through official notices, not rumors.
- Don’t tie yourself to one vendor. This applies to any company. Keeping model calls in one place and maintaining your own evaluation set makes switching easier.
What to watch
When the official registration filing (S-1) becomes public and what it contains, the roadshow schedule, the actual offering price and valuation, and the progress of OpenAI’s own filing.
